Steve & Lorraine
Serving in Queensland’s Outback
For 30 years, the Cavills have been in Longreach serving those living in remote parts of the Australian outback.
Flying a small plane, they cover an extensive area to share God’s Word in schools, towns and on isolated properties. Their ‘mission field’ is a vast 220,000 square kms; three times the size of Tasmania.
Driven by a passion to serve, Steve and Lorraine have devoted their lives to connecting and ministering to remote communities, continuing the valuable work of Outback Aerial Mission that first began over six decades ago.
What is Outback Aerial Mission?
OAM was founded in 1961, by Es and Val Morse who saw the hardship and isolation experienced by those living in the harsh Queensland outback. They decided to sell their farms, buy a small plane and move from Tasmania to Longreach.
In 1981, Es and Val retired, passing the OAM baton to others to carry. Then in 1996, when George and Lynette Dean were moving on, Steve and Lorraine felt the Lord was calling them to take up the task.
Living in Victoria at the time, and in a huge step of faith without even enough money to make the move, the Cavills made the decision to relocate their young family of seven to Longreach, trusting that the Lord would provide. And He did.
“The pathway to the mission field is as varied as the individuals God calls to go. My own journey was not via Bible college or missionary training school. I have no degrees or official training.
Looking back, I can see the Lord was preparing me over many years through my personal study of His Word; through my work as a mechanic; and through serving in pastoral and teaching roles within my church.
I’ve been asked if missionary service is an adventure. It sure is, but only if God is doing the calling.”

Their aim
OAM’s purpose is simply to present the Christian Gospel to people in the outback; and to encourage believers in their personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. They do this primarily by:
teaching religious instruction in 16 isolated schools
visiting people in isolated towns / properties to share Gospel
visiting to fellowship and support Christians living in remote areas
transporting (by plane) CWCI facilitators
host Bible studies in their own home / homes of those living remotely
officiating at weddings and funerals
