Jean-Claude & Joyce

Serving in Malawi

Jean-Claude and Joyce, along with their four children have been living in rural, southern Malawi since 2018.

Having grown up in a war-torn Africa where their lives were at risk, Jean-Claude and Joyce were relieved to escape to the safety of Australia as refugees around 2001.

They had absolutely no desire to return to Africa where life is tough, and were happily building a new life with their family in Brisbane, when God showed them that He had a different plan...

Engaging with the locals

People group: Yawo
Population: 2.5 million
Main religion: Islam

Malawi is a landlocked country in Africa with a population of 3 million, and an economy based on agriculture. The Yawo people are 95% Muslim, and they combine Islam with their ancient tribal rituals, carrying a heightened awareness (and fear) of the power of the spirit realm.

Through day-to-day routines, Jean-Claude and Joyce are engaging with the Yawo in practical and meaningful ways. By being able to respond to both spiritual and practical physical needs; opportunities are opening to share the good news of Jesus.

Jean-Claude visits four villages weekly to teach and disciple new Christians. He also works with kids in street gangs, and provides marriage counselling.

Sewing classes

In 2024, Malawi was ranked as the 7th poorest country in the world. Around 70% of the population lives on less than AUD$3.20 per day.

God has opened a door for Joyce to share her sewing talents with locals, teaching them this highly sought-after skill which can support their families by bringing dignity and a reliable source of much-needed income.

Joyce teaches up to 20 people at a time; also showing them the skills needed to run a small business, offering them the best chance of success.

There’s always a waiting list for Joyce’s classes.
